Are you an existing Affect Energy customer?
If you’re an Affect Energy customer, you’re likely to have a few questions about the new Affect Energy and how their merge with Octopus Energy affects you.
Affect Energy account login
If you’re with Affect Energy, you should still be able to login to your account through the Affect Energy website. However, you were likely offered to create a new account with Octopus Energy when they took over.
With an Octopus account, you can do all the same things you could on your Affect online account:
- Submit meter readings
- Change and make payments
- View your bills
- Contact customer service
- Change account details
- Let them know you’re moving house
Now you can also request a smart meter, play the ‘wheel of fortune’, and monitor your energy usage.
Why can’t I access my online account?
If you’re having trouble signing into your Affect Energy online account, it might be because you created a new account with Octopus when they took over. Try signing in on both websites to make sure.
The most common reason people struggle to log in to online accounts is that there’s an error with their email address or password. Check for spelling errors and that you’re using up-to-date details.
If you’re still having trouble, try resetting your password or setting up a new account with Octopus Energy if you haven’t already.
Topping up and paying bills
With Affect Energy’s small customer base, they didn’t support prepayment meters. Now that they’ve merged with Octopus Energy, there are so many more customers with prepayment meters, but it’s still tricky as you have to contact Octopus directly to find out most things about your meter and tariffs.
How do I get a new top-up key/card?
No matter how organised you might be, it’s easy to misplace your electricity key or gas card. To get a new key or card for your prepayment meter, all you have to do is email email@example.com or call 0808 164 1088.
They can either send your new key or card in the post or you might be able to pick one up from a local PayPoint store. You might have to pay for your replacement.
What happens if I can’t afford to top up?
If it’s getting close to payday and you’re low on credit, your gas and electricity meter will hold £5 of emergency credit each for you to use until you can top up again.
When your gas meter falls under £2 or your electricity meter falls under £1, you can use your emergency credit. Simply insert your card or key into the meter to activate it and you can keep using it as normal. Any emergency credit you use will be taken out of your next top-up so make sure you put enough to cover what you’ve used and what you’re going to use.
If you run out of credit during evenings (4pm-10am), weekends, or bank holidays, your electricity won’t be turned off. This is called ‘friendly credit hours’ and is set up at times it would be inconvenient to lose electricity or might be hard to get to the shop to top up.
I want a smart meter
Automatic meter readings!
Did you know that with a smart meter you’ll never have to submit a meter reading again! 100% accurate bills, all the time. Give us a call to find out more about automatic meter readings.
Smart meters are being rolled out across the country in an attempt to improve our carbon emissions and become net zero. Affect Energy only planned on installing their own smart meters in 2018 which ended up being when they merged with Octopus Energy. Before that, they were still able to support SMETS2 meters.
If you want to upgrade to a smart meter, simply register your interest using the link below.
Now that Affect Energy is with Octopus, there are exclusive tariffs for customers with smart meters. They’re still in beta testing at the moment, however, they can save you money on when you use your energy at off-peak times without needing an Economy 7 meter.
Why is my Affect Energy smart meter beeping?
There are a number of common reasons why your smart meter might be making an annoying beeping sound. The beeping is probably completely normal, so there’s no need to worry.
The most likely reason your smart meter is beeping is that your in-home display is running low on battery. If this is the case, all you have to do to stop the beeping is to plug it into the wall to charge it back up. It might be worth keeping it plugged in in the future to avoid this happening again.
Another reason it might be beeping is that you’re getting close to or over the budget set up on your meter. Being able to set a budget for your energy usage is great for helping you cut down on your energy usage and bills, but if you regularly go over budget, you can adjust it through your in-home display.
Are you considering switching?
If you want to be with Affect Energy, you’ll now have to switch with Octopus Energy instead. When they were independent, their switching process was mostly online, however, it doesn’t let you use their website to get a quote any more.
While there were few reviews as Affect Energy, they were very mixed, praising their customer service, pricing, and quick call response times. However, customers found it difficult to switch away from Affect Energy and had trouble with online account access. They had very few reviews (only 16 on Trustpilot) and ended up with a respectable 69%.
Since the switch to Octopus, they’ve received a lot more reviews (over 2,000 more), bringing their ratings up a lot higher.
|Trustpilot||4.8 out of 5 | 57,603 reviews|
|Which?||80% overall score|
|Reviews.io||2.9 out of 5 | 349 reviews|
People are still rating their customer service and quick response times very highly, as well as how easy the switch from Affect Energy to Octopus Energy went. They now have very few negative reviews, aa lot of which are focused on smart meters and billing issues.
As Affect Energy, they only had two tariffs – both of them fixed and paid by direct debit. However, you can no longer access their tariffs or get quotes on their website, however, in 2020 they assured customers that they can get a quote by calling 0330 60 62 675 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Otherwise, you’ll have to look at Octopus Energy’s tariffs and quotes instead. If you have or want a prepayment meter, you’ll have to email email@example.com for a quote, however, the rest of the tariffs you can find on their website:
Energy companies now have to disclose their fuel mix for their customers to see. This shows what makes up their electricity and can shape what customers think.
The last fuel mix disclosure by Affect Energy was their 2016/2017 mix from before they were bought by Octopus Energy. This was their make-up:
However, they now use 100% renewable energy with Octopus.
The Warm Home Discount
Get £140 from the Warm Home Discount
Let us guide you through the Warm Home Discount and find you the right tariff that can also give you an additional £140 from the Warm Home Discount.
The Warm Home Discount is a Government-led scheme aimed to help low-income and vulnerable households to fund their winter energy bills. Those eligible can receive a one-off payment of £140 to put towards their bills from September to March.
As a smaller energy provider, Affect Energy only offered the Warm Home Discount to customers who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. However, now that Octopus Energy has taken over, more customers will be able to claim the discount.
If you receive certain income-based benefits and support, you could be eligible for the Octopus Energy Warm Home Discount. You’ll be categorised as the ‘broader’ group and will have to apply for the discount every year. It’s given out on a first-come, first-served basis, so you’ll want to apply as soon as the application window opens in the Autumn.
If you were receiving the discount from Affect Energy already, you’ll still be able to get your discount as usual. You might have to contact the Department of Work and Pensions to make sure that they know you’re with Octopus Energy now.
